The run out to Plettenberg Bay takes you through Knysna and over the Bloukrans and Keurbooms bridges — two of the highest road bridges in the country, with views straight down into forested gorges. It's the longest of our Garden Route routes, and also the most dramatic, which is exactly why a manual convertible earns its keep out here.
Plett itself is built for a slower pace once you arrive: Robberg Nature Reserve's coastal trails, Central Beach and Lookout Beach for surfing, and Keurboomstrand a little further along for quieter sand. Whale watching from the shore is genuinely good here between June and November — southern rights come close enough to see from the beach, no boat required. The N2 back toward George at sunset, with Formosa Peak silhouetted behind you, is reason enough to make the trip.
Collection and return are both handled at George Airport (illy Express) — book online with a R500 refundable deposit, and the balance is settled when you collect the car, ready for the coast road out to Plett.
